Making Schools Safe and Inclusive for LGBTQ Students
Providing all students with a safe environment – where they can be themselves – is important to their academic success, self-esteem and personal well-being. The need to accept, protect and respect all students must be the first priority in every school, regardless of actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. This course is designed to provide information about how to make your school more inclusive for people with diverse sexual and gender identities. Topics covered include challenges faced by students who are LGBTQ, how to help LGBTQ students feel safe and respected, tips for speaking with students and ways to create a positive school culture.

Walter G. Meyer
Walter G. Meyer is an author and anti-bullying expert whose critically acclaimed novel Rounding Third was based in part on his own high school experiences. Meyer has spoken about bullying at universities, libraries and LGBTQ+ centers and on radio shows across the country. He is active in numerous LGBTQ+ groups. He is also the co-author of The Respectful Leader.
Scott Hirschfeld has worked as an educator in schools and with nonprofit organizations for more than 30 years. He began his career as a classroom teacher and staff developer in the New York City public school system. He went on to serve as a curriculum developer and program director for various education initiatives at the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and UNICEF USA, where he focused on diversity, anti-prejudice, social justice and global learning topics. Scott has an MS in elementary education and an MEd in educational leadership from Bank Street College of Education.
Catherine Mattice is the president of Civility Partners, a consulting, training and coaching firm focused on helping organizations create more positive and respectful workplaces.
